Looking to ring in the New Year in a new place? We couldn’t agree more. Each of these destinations offers something for every lifestyle and interesting, yet they are equally festive and promise to be memorable.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Forget it all: dress in traditional white, order the classic Caipirinha and proceed to lose yourself among a crowd of over two million people in one of the most vibrant cities in the world. The dramatic setting of tropical mountains alongside great beaches, and the music and smiling faces – this is the way to ring in the new year. Copacabana is the ‘it’ place as dancers and musicians take to the stages and lure you to move to the rhythm of samba. The goddess of the sea, Yemanja awaits the sea of flowers, showered on her as a good luck offering. All this happens under midnight fireworks.
Despite the size of the capital, locals are international on partying and they do it well, putting neighboring cities to shame. On New Year’s Eve, celebration mode kicks in and lasts well until the following morning. Join the bonfires and burn away last year’s troubles. Then look up as the fireworks light the sky and welcome in bright new opportunities. Head to the city’s landmark building, the Perlan, and soak in a great view of the city. The cherry on the icing must be a soak in the open air hot springs post-celebration.
Napa Valley, California
Expect a laid back and less crowded holiday in this corner of the world. Hotels and wineries across the region host their own parties, providing the best wines from their cellars. Make sure you book at the Black & White Gala that takes place at Domaine Chandon or head to Trinitas Cellars at Meritage Resort and enjoy a decadent, candlelit dinner in the wine caves. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, join the mobile party aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train that crosses the valley.
Berlin is famous for its hard core night life which means they know how to organize one good party. So good in fact, it’s one mile long at the famous “Party Mile”, where more than 1 million people come together at Brandenburg Gate. The line up includes some 100 music stages, German beer, mulled wine and local specialties – from teenagers to the retired, everyone is there. The fireworks show has some 2 million starry eyes looking up and cheering to life. Celebrate your youth at the dance clubs, well into the morning. Or wake up in time for the annual four mile New Year’s Run – a great way to get a head start on your resolutions!
New Orleans, Louisiana
If anyone knows a celebration, it’s the city of New Orleans. No matter what time of year and despite all the challenges, the people of this city know good music, good food and good spirits. Galatoire’s on Bourbon Street is one of those places with Creole cuisine and fantastic jazz. Full of rhythm and color, the place to be is Jackson Square. Watch the baby New Year ball drop from the top of Jax Brewery and enjoy the fireworks about the good ol’ Mississippi River. If it’s a first-time visit, make sure to book a steamboat cruise for front-row views. We suggest heading back to Bourbon Street for a night to remember.
